This page collects material from earlier projects that fall outside my current professional work but still matter to me.

Where possible, files are stored locally so they remain accessible over time rather than disappearing behind broken links.

Film work and film culture (2007–2012)

During this period I was involved in small-scale filmmaking and film culture in Saint John, New Brunswick. Most of the work was informal and collaborative, shaped more by enthusiasm and friendship than professional ambition.

Several items below remain here largely because of the people involved and the community we built around them.

Filmmaking at the Margins: A Brief Study of Filmmaking in Saint John

Arif Hussain, MA thesis, University of New Brunswick Saint John, 2010

A study of independent and student filmmaking in Saint John during the mid-2000s. It documents a local creative scene that is now difficult to reconstruct and includes interviews with many participants.

Interesting finds

The faith I left behind: Why I am not a Muslim
Reef al-Khalil, Free Inquiry, Volume 34, No. 2 (February/March 2014)

An autobiographical essay reflecting on religious identity, doubt, and leaving Islam.

Actors (short film, 2009)

A no-budget university assignment shot on a Canon HV30 with a single external microphone and edited in Sony Vegas Pro. Very much a product of its time and constraints.

Events and series

Alongside filmmaking, I helped organize small film events and academic gatherings in Saint John.

Summer Film Series (UNBSJ)

A summer screening series featuring classic, cult, and politically oriented films. Screenings were open to the public and typically followed by informal discussion.

Posters and schedules from the series are archived below.

Student conference and film festivals

I was also involved in organizing a small social sciences conference and several short film festivals during this period. These were modest events, but they played an important role in building a local creative and academic community.
